Esfandyar, an Iranian expatriate in Paris on the verge of loosing his sight, returns to Iran after a twenty year absence. He has to confront the ghosts of his past. His father, who is about to die, and his old love Forough, who has married Esfandyar's father in the meantime, thus becoming his stepmother. Among political betrayals of the past and his love conflict with Forough, Esfandyar has many accounts to settle before he sinks in the darkness.
